Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Title 17 of the administrative code of the city of New York is hereby amended by adding a new section, 17-179, to follow section 17-178, to read as follows: �17-179. Food containing monosodium glutamate; warning sign. a. Any person who owns, operates or manages a restaurant or other food establishment where prepared food is sold at retail for either on or off premises consumption, shall have posted, in a conspicuous place, a sign which clearly reads, "Warning; Foods prepared in this establishment may contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) as an ingredient. Please inquire." b. The department shall make such warning signs available to the owner, operator or manager of such restaurant or food establishment, and shall promulgate regulations with respect to the posting of said signs. A fee may be charged by the department to cover the cost of printing, postage and handling. c. All restaurants or food establishments in which prepared foods are sold at retail for either on or off premises consumption, shall indicate on their menu, in a conspicuous place, a printed notice advising patrons that some of the goods may contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), and whether such foods can be prepared without MSG. d. The department shall promulgate rules with respect to the printing of such notices on the menus. e. Any violation of the provisions of this section, or of any of the rules promulgated hereunder, shall be a violation subject to a civil penalty of zero to not more than one hundred dollars. A violation under this section shall be adjudicated before the administrative tribunal of the department. �2. This local law shall take effect sixty days after its enactment. 1 2
