Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Section 18 of the New York city charter is amended by adding a new subdivision h to read as follows: h. There is hereby established an office of translation and interpretation within the office of immigrant affairs, the head of which shall be the director of the office of immigrant affairs. Within appropriations therefor, the office of translation and interpretation shall employ individuals who are proficient in the designated citywide languages, as defined in section 23-1101 of the administrative code, for the purpose of providing translation and interpretation services to the city and its agencies. The office of translation and interpretation shall have the power and duty to: 1. Upon request, translate documents created by agencies into the designated citywide languages; 2. Provide interpretation services to agencies for the designated citywide languages; and 3. Perform any other appropriate function related to providing translation and interpretation services to city agencies. � 2. This local law takes effect 180 days after it becomes law.
