Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Subdivision (c) of section 440 of the New York city charter is amended by adding a new paragraph 8 to read as follows: 8. Within the first year after appointment, each member of the board shall participate in a ride-along with a member of the police department. The ride-along shall be: (i) at least 2 hours long; and (ii) conducted in the presence of a police officer performing police duties. The failure by a board member to complete the ride-along within the first year after appointment shall not affect the validity of the member's appointment to the board. A member appointed to fill a vacancy on the board shall be exempt from the requirements of this paragraph if the balance of the unexpired term the member is appointed to serve is less than 1 year. � 2. Subdivision (d) of section 440 of the New York city charter is amended by adding a new paragraph 4 to read as follows: 4. The police commissioner shall cooperate with members of the board to facilitate the ride-along with a member of the police department required by subdivision (c) of this section. � 3.
