Summary

This bill would extend the length of the beach and outdoor pool season for those beaches and pools under the jurisdiction of the Department of Parks and Recreation to begin on the second Saturday in May and end on the second Sunday of each October, instead of on the Sunday following Labor Day. The operating hours of such beaches and outdoor pools would be extended from the current 10:00AM to 6:00PM to 8:00AM to 8:00PM. Pools located at indoor facilities would be required to be open each day at a minimum from 7:00AM to 9:00PM.

Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Section 18-154 of the administrative code of the city of New York, as added by local law number 181 for the year 2017, is amended to read as follows: � 18-154 Bathing season and operating hours for beaches and pools. a. The commissioner shall ensure that (i) the bathing season of each year for beaches and pools under the jurisdiction of the department begins on the second saturday of May and ends on the [Sunday following Labor Day] second sunday of October and (ii) during such season, each such bathing beach and outdoor pool remains open to the public each day, at a minimum, from the hours of [10:00] 8:00 a.m. to [6:00] 8:00 p.m. For pools located indoors, the commissioner shall ensure that such pools remain open to the public each day, at a minimum from the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. b. Notwithstanding subdivision a of this section, the commissioner may limit the bathing season for extreme weather conditions, staffing level requirements for beaches or particular facilities, and the safety of the public. � 2.
