Summary

Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Title 14 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 14-176 to read as follows: �14-176 Autism safety training. a. Definitions. For the purposes of this section, the following terms have the following meanings: Autism. The term "autism" means a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as other unique conditions which may be caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. b. Training. The New York city police department shall train patrol officers in recognizing and responding to individuals with autism as part of their academy training. The training shall be sensitive to a wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each individual with autism. �2. This local law shall take effect immediately after it becomes law.
