Summary

This bill would require Group M occupancies that are a part of a building that also includes Group R occupancies to install at least one smoke detector on each floor of the Group M occupancy. This requirement would apply to all new and existing buildings and must be met by January 1, 2020.

Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Article 315 of chapter 3 of title 28 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended to add a new section 28-315.2.5 to read as follows: � 28-315.2.5 Smoke detectors. Smoke detectors shall be provided and installed in accordance with section 907.2.7.2 of the New York city building code on or before January 1, 2020. � 2. Chapter 9 of the New York city building code is amended by adding a new section 907.2.7.2 to read as follows: 907.2.7.2 Group M occupancy in mixed-use buildings. At least one smoke detector shall be installed on each floor of a Group M occupancy that is part of a building or structure housing a Group R occupancy. � 3. This local law takes effect immediately.
