Summary

This bill would require the Department of Transportation to mark the location of each fire hydrant next to a street by painting a symbol in the middle of the street directly across from the hydrant. These markings are intended to allow the Fire Department to find the nearest fire hydrant quickly when responding to an emergency.

Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Subchapter 1 of chapter 1 of title 19 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 19-159.4 to read as follows: � 19-159.4 Fire hydrant markers. a. The department shall mark the location of each fire hydrant situated adjacent to a public street using a symbol painted in the middle of the street, directly across from the fire hydrant, and shall maintain such markings so that they remain clearly visible. b. The absence of a marking required by this section shall not constitute a defense to a violation of any law prohibiting the obstruction a fire hydrant. � 2.
