Summary

This bill would require the creation of a citywide Disaster Assistance Center. The center would serve as a resource for New Yorkers affected by natural disasters. The duties of the center will include creating and distributing information on legal services organizations and private insurance companies to aid New York City residents with insurance filings. The center will also provide and distribute necessary information on local, state, and federal disaster assistance funding and programs. Finally, the center will develop and maintain a citywide disaster recovery hotline.

Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Section 20 of the New York city charter is amended by adding a new subdivision k to read as follows: k. Disaster assistance center. The office shall establish a disaster assistance center to provide centralized support to city residents affected by natural disasters. The center shall be headed by a manager who shall be appointed by and shall report to the director. The duties of the center shall include, but not be limited to: 1. Maintaining a citywide disaster assistance center hotline; 2. Creating and distributing hard copy and electronic materials regarding legal services organizations and non-profit organizations who may assist with legal claims relating to disaster recovery and insurance; 3. Creating and distributing hard copy and electronic materials regarding city, state, and federal disaster assistance and relief programs; and 4. Creating and distributing hard copy and electronic materials to assist in the submission of insurance claims. � 2.
