Be it enacted by the Council as follows: Section 1. Chapter 1 of title 14 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 14-175 to read as follows: � 14-193 Sound level meters. a. Definitions. For the purposes of this section the following terms have the following meanings: Dwelling. The term "dwelling" means any building lawfully occupied in whole or in part as the temporary or permanent residence of one or more natural persons. Law enforcement officer. The term "law enforcement officer" a peace officer or police officer as defined in the Criminal Procedure Law who is employed by the city of New York or a special patrolman appointed by the police commissioner pursuant to section 14-106 of the administrative code. Sound level meter. The term "sound level meter" means any instrument, including but not limited to a microphone, an amplifier, an output meter, and frequency weighting networks, for the measurement of noise and sound levels in a specified manner and which complies with standards established by the American National Standards Institute specifications for sound level meters S1.4-1971, as amended or S1.4-1983, as amended. b. Law enforcement officers responding to noise complaints pursuant to chapter 2 of title 24, where the noise originates from a dwelling and enforcement of the applicable law may require the measurement of sound, shall be equipped with sound level meters and shall use such sound level meters where appropriate. � 2.
